Mr. America’s Mass-Building Plan

Q: I just got The Power-Density Mass Workout 2.0, and [Mr. America] Doug Brignole’s one-exercise-per-muscle training is interesting, to say the least. And his interview [Chapter 4] makes a lot of good points for high-rep sets.

A: Yes, his “Super TORQ” method can rack up some impressive gains. It helped Doug get into the best shape of his long bodybuilding career, and he won the Muscle Beach International Over 50 competition while using that routine (see photo below).

At 200 pounds and 5 percent bodyfat, he says that’s a record for him as far as conditioning—and he tips his hat to us and 4X for helping him get there…

You did indeed have a hand in my transformation. In general, the turnaround came for me by way of several major changes. Higher reps, certainly. Also, far fewer sets, far fewer exercises—and now ONLY the best exercises (mechanically speaking).

His method, Super TORQ (tension-overload repetition quantity) is basically 50-40-30-20-10 reps on only ONE exercise per muscle. He uses progressive-weight increases and drop sets on the last one, making Mr. America’s mass-building plan painful but incredibly effective…

We reread his Q&A from time to time, and we almost always end up incorporating more Super TORQ into our routines again. And you get might sore, too.
