Here’s a fantastic shot of Arnold at Venice Beach during the first years of his arrival in the U.S. We’re not sure who took it, but it may have been bodybuilding journalist Gene Mozee.
Arnold’s arrival sent Venice, as well as the entire bodybuilding world, into shock. He was bigger, better, and bolder than all other bodybuilders of that era—except for maybe Sergio Oliva, whom he quickly passed in mass after a few years here.
Arnold’s training was key…
We’ve talked about Arnold’s multi-angular workouts before, which he did from the beginning, but perhaps even more important was his focus and feel in the gym…
Focusing on the mind-muscle connection is extremely important. It’s the anabolic amplifier that makes every set exponentially better…
Take it from the Oak and feel every repetition stroke..
Plus, use hypertrophic stretch exercises, like flyes, to slow-mo reps to speed sets to keep your mass gains coming.
For more info on all of the above, please check out our expanded Quick-Start Muscle Building Guide. The NEW 2.0 version has many of those mass tactics infused into complete slow-twitch-exhaustion at-home workouts in a big, updated section…
The workouts are tailored to build muscle in a bare-bones home gym with only moderate poundages—all you need is an adjustable bench and dumbbells (all we have is a bench and the 50-pound PowerBlock set, and it’s working great for us big-time—we look forward to every workout)…

Till next time, train hard—and smart—for BIG results.

Mike Westerdal is a renowned personal trainer and national best-selling physical preparedness author, but he’s also a father and a husband… who would do anything to protect his family.
He used to get pushed around when younger and spent years building up his body and becoming stronger, getting mentally and physically tough the hard way. As he got bigger, he learned to handle himself, and working in security, he learned first-hand how violence really plays out.
Some of the other guys online who show off their self-defense videos and books need to get a grip. The level of skill needed to pull off their basic moves is CRAZY for most ordinary people.
- If a defense system requires more than a few hours to master, it’s not a program.
- The only techniques you will ever use are the simple ones.
- They need to work for an ordinary person without prior training, technique, or ability.
- So even if you think you don’t have time to learn how to defend yourself…
- You don’t need to spend years training to be a martial artist.
