Here’s a shot circa 1970 of legendary bodybuilders Boyer Coe and Casey Viator, hired to by local farmers to stand in a field and scare away crows…
Seriously, Coe had an amazingly aesthetic physique back in the day with crazy peaked biceps, while young Viator, probably around age 20 here, was a thick-as-a-brick mass machine. Both were from Louisiana, so crawdads in your protein drink may build mass…
Viator became the primary example of Nautilus machine training under the authoritarian eye of creator Arthur Jones. Viator was the subject of the Colorado Experiment, in which he gained over 60 pounds of muscle in four weeks.
You could say Casey had pretty good genetics for building muscle. He won the 1971 Mr. America at age 19, a record that we believe still stands, and he did it with high-intensity training under the tutelage of Jones—10 months of short, intense workouts.
Years later Casey turned pro and could be seen training with Mike Mentzer at Gold’s Gym in Venice, California, every so often. He won a couple of IFBB pro shows in the ‘80s.
Coe won the Mr. America in 1968 and later won the Mr. Universe. He went to work for Nautilus as well, but frustration led him to create his own machine company, BodyMasters Sports Industries, after competing as a pro bodybuilder for years.
And Coe was strong from the beginning. At age 17 he reportedly bench pressed 420 pounds.
Both became incredible bodybuilders and were outstanding in the field—as you can see in the photo (see what we did there?).
