McArdle won the 1965 Mr. Los Angeles and Mr. Southern California, but could only garner a 16th-place finish at the Mr. America that year. Later he got as high as second in that coveted contest, but the winner’s circle eluded him, despite his muscularly aesthetic physique…

Vince’s Gym churned out some great bodybuilders back in the day, as well as a number of fit movie-star physiques like Clint Eastwood’s. And Carl Weathers, a.k.a. Apollo Creed from the “Rocky” movies, also frequented that gym.
We were lucky enough to talk with Vince on a number of occasions when he used to visit the Iron Man offices years ago. We say “talk,” but we really only listened because if you interrupted him, he would begin hurling obscenities designed to disparage your mom and make you cry…
Still, he knew muscle building, so we always gave him the floor. We credit his Density Training method for helping us develop STX (slow-twitch exhaustion), which is also based on Brazilian research showing that short rests between sets fatigue slow-twitch fibers to better activate fast-twitch growth (see Old Man, Young Muscle for more).
Give STX a try to build more size, but be prepared—the short rests may bring tears to your eyes.
