Here’s a great shot of Lee Labrada and his son Hunter exaggerating the size of the fish they caught on their recent vacation…
Hunter is an IFBB pro and Lee is now in his 60s. Check out these shots of him then and now. He looks as if he could easily get onstage and blow some minds.
What’s his bodybuilding longevity secret? For most of his career he subscribed to the Lee Haney school of “stimulate don’t annihilate” your muscles during workouts; however, he fused that with the Mike Mentzer shorter workouts to failure—but with only moderate poundages with control.
It has never been about pushing as much weight as possible for Lee but more about reaching the “growth threshold” for each muscle. Here’s how Labrada defined it…
The growth threshold is the point at which the level of fatigue in the muscle is high enough that a growth response is elicited. Your goal during a workout should be to fatigue the target muscles you are training more and more with each succeeding set. Signals are sent to the brain that set up the compensation, or growth, process during the post workout period, so that in future workouts, you can handle it.
You can reach the growth threshold for each muscle safely and efficiently with STX (slow-twitch exhaustion)—moderate weights with short rests between sets to progressively hypertrophy all muscle fiber types as quickly as possible (short workouts)…
Till next time, train hard—and smart—for BIG results.
