As we get older, the quote above becomes even more important—you must train in a way that’s practical for you and not something you’ll dread in order for you to sustain it for the rest of your life…
For example, Doug liked supersetting opposing muscle groups, such as chest and back. He’d do a set for the ideal chest exercise, decline dumbbell presses, then move to a set of cable lat pullins. He went back and forth for three or four rounds…
I tried that for a few weeks and didn’t like it. I felt smaller, the setup time was annoying, and my nervous system didn’t reload properly between rounds.
Plus my workouts were taking longer—not practical or sustainable for ME.
I went back to STX for 2 sets on the ideal exercise and followed with a set of and add-on move, usually a stretch- or contracted-position exercise.
I’ll end my diatribe with a quote that I used in both OMYM and OMYM2…
My goal at this stage of my life is to do the most efficient workout I can. That means using the fewest sets necessary to get the results I’m satisfied with. Those results include being pain-free and healthy, plus having enough muscle to look like I’m a fit, older drug-free bodybuilder. I accomplish that with 35-minute workouts three times a week.
