Fast Fat Loss

Jonathan flexing abs in mirror - Fast Fat Loss

Q: Do you think I could lose 15 to 20 pounds in a month? I have a reunion coming up, and I want to be in a somewhat healthy looking condition. I was 250 last night. I want the fat off. It’s killing me to see this gut—you have no idea!

A: Yes, you could technically lose that much weight, but most of it would be water and muscle—and you probably wouldn’t look much better or feel healthy. We all want fast fat loss, and we’re all impatient when it comes to changing our bodies, but the best strategy is slow and steady… [Read more…]

Back Work for Arm Size — Say what?

Jonathan doing 3D POF work for lats... and triceps -

Q: Help! I need triceps sweep. Mine look flat from the side, and I’ve tried every exercise there is. Any suggestions?

A: We discuss a number of triceps “sweep” techniques and exercises in the X-traordinary Arms e-book, such as lying extensions, which mainly target the triceps’ long head, and dumbbell overhead extensions, which hit the long head with important stretch overload. If you’ve tried all of those long-head-specific exercises and programs, you may want to specialize on building some lat size. (Say what?) [Read more…]

Muscle Expansion With Isolation

Jonathan Lawson under-grip chins - Muscle Expansion With Isolation

Q: Isn’t it true that you activate the most muscle fibers in the flexed position, like at the top of a leg extension or leg curl? I know that [Nautilus creator] Arthur Jones said that. So shouldn’t I really flex at the top of those isolation-type exercises? Come to think of it, why should I do compound exercises [like squats] at all? Isolating the muscle appears to be the logical way to stimulate the muscle growth best.

A: We respect the late Arthur Jones and value much of his research, theories, and opinions (Steve met him many years ago in Florida); however, newer research states the contrary—that the contracted, or flexed, position of an exercise is not where the most force/fiber activation occurs—it’s the bottom, where the target muscle is somewhat stretched. Here’s a quote from respected scientists Steven J. Fleck, Ph.D., and William J. Kraemer, Ph.D., that makes the point (we’ll put their statements in simpler terms in a moment): [Read more…]

Fast 3D Muscle Mass: Efficiency-of-Effort Back Attack

Jonathan back double biceps - Fast 3D Muscle Mass: Efficiency-of-Effort Back Attack

Q: I don’t have a lot of time to train, which is why I look to you for info. All of your techniques and workouts revolve around efficiency, which is great. I can’t afford to waste time. My question is about back training. When I do a 3D POF lat routine, doesn’t my midback get plenty of work too? And isn’t the opposite true as well: When I train midback, don’t my lats get enough stimulation? I just don’t want to do extra work that’s not necessary. Every minute I’m in the gym must count.

A: We hear you. We squeeze our training into a limited schedule, so our primary concern is efficiency-of-effort muscle building. That’s why we try a lot of things and discard what doesn’t work, constantly refining our workouts. [Read more…]

Bench Press Stress

Jonathan Lawson decline bench presses - Bench Press Stress

Q: A guy at my gym told me that dumbbell bench presses are better than barbell benches for chest development. He said it’s because of the increased range of motion you can get with the dumbbells and the pec squeeze you can do at the top. What do you think? Should I switch?

A: Well, as we explain in The Ultimate Mass Workout e-book, neither of those is best for chest development; decline presses are a much better choice because that angle puts you in a more ergonomically correct position for hitting pecs and minimizing front-delt involvement (it’s why people lift their butts off the bench when doing them flat—to get into the more advantageous decline position). Detail Your Delts

Jonathan Lawson incline lateral raise - Detail Your Delts

Q: I’m having trouble with the incline one-arm lateral raise [stretch-position delt exercise]. I tend to lose my balance when I’m on my side on the incline bench, and I can’t feel my center-delt head working. Any suggestions?

A: It does take some jostling and positioning to get set on the incline bench for incline one-arm lateral raises—but it’s worth the time to get it right since these can really help detail your delts. It was an Arnold favorite, and for good reason: It stretches the medial head as well as the posterior head, both of which add considerable roundness to your delts. [Read more…]

Stage Sets: Two Sets in One

Steve Holman Smith Squats

Q: I recall from some of your previous newsletters that you’ve done something called stage sets. What are those?

A: The stage technique is a great one for jolting new muscle growth because it does two critical things: emphasizes the semi-stretch point of the exercise’s stroke and extends tension time on the target muscle. Let’s look at Smith machine squats as an example… [Read more…]

The Best Exercise for Fat Loss

Jonathan on stationary bike - The Best Exercise for Fat Loss

Q: I keep reading that interval cardio is better than steady-state aerobic exercise for fat loss. Should I be doing intervals instead of ending my workouts with 30 minutes of medium-intensity fast walking?

A: Interval cardio, which is going all out for 30 seconds alternated with slower, steady-state work for one minute, has been shown in research studies to burn more fat postexercise than medium-intensity steady-state work. The reason? Muscle damage. Running or pedaling a stationary bike all out for 30 seconds brings in the fast-twitch fibers, just like a weight workout, damaging them. The repair process is what boosts the metabolism and fat loss. It’s been shown that fat is used as an energy source during the muscle-repair process.

In our X-treme Lean e-book we use the example of running on a track for interval cardio—you sprint the straight-aways and walk the curves. As we explain in that e-book (the Q&A section on page 87-88), interval cardio is very similar to an intense leg workout with weights. Because of that, if you choose to use it, you should not use it the day before or after a heavy leg workout. You can, however, use it as one of your weekly leg workouts or in conjunction with a leg workout. For example, you could do your normal leg workout, but reduce the volume so you can end the session with interval work on a treadmill or stationary bike.

Jonathan on stationary bike - The Best Exercise for Fat Loss

The main point about interval cardio is that it can trigger overtraining if you simply use it in place of your steady-state cardio. It takes more thought to implement it correctly because you are damaging muscles—essentially adding another high-intensity workout to the mix.

If you have a lot of fat to lose, steady-state work at the end of most of your upper-body workouts is a good idea—that is the 30 minutes of medium-intensity walking you’re now doing. After weight training, all of the sugar is out of your bloodstream, so your body is primed to burn fat almost as soon as you hit the treadmill.

If you want to do interval cardio, use the above recommendations—as part of your leg workout or as a separate leg workout during the week. It will add up to a faster fat-to-muscle transition rather than no-gaining overtraining.

Till next time, train hard—and smart—for BIG results.

Instant Muscle-Building Motivation

Q: I really, really want a muscular physique like you guys have. I just can’t seem to stick with it. I’ve read books on motivation, but nothing seems to help. Any words of wisdom? Am I just a dreamer who will never get up and go after it?

A: Dreaming is the first step to getting what you’re after, but lack of motivation is the number-one goal killer. Even if you do manage to get to the gym regularly, if you’re not motivated to push hard and surpass previous bests, you won’t get results. You need to light a fire and keep it lit. (That’s one reason we put out daily newsletters—to try and keep our readers stoked.)

Fat-to-Muscle Facts and Photos

Becky Holman before and after - Fat-to-Muscle Facts and Photos

Q: I saw before and after photos of Steve’s wife, Becky, on your site. Amazing transformation! My girlfriend would like to know what type of program she used. Did she use X Reps, or should women not use that type of intense training?

A: Becky’s transformation took a few months (she kept having to restart due to motivation issues—so much fat to lose was overwhelming to her—and she didn’t use X Reps because we hadn’t developed that technique yet; however, she did use static holds, which we call a Static X. At the end of a set to exhaustion, she would drive the weight up as far as she could and hold for a five count or so to extend the tension time. That had a similar muscle fiber-activation boost as well as occlusion effects. She added muscle and lost fat quickly, as you can see from her before and after photos… [Read more…]
