Throughout my older ebooks, I rarely said “shrugs.” It was always “forward-lean shrugs.” That’s because most of the fibers run more horizontal than vertical and are behind the neck. That means the forward-lean position produces somewhat better stretch and activation…
So I agree with Instagram user @JordanWheelerFitness pictured above. You can see how leaning forward can put your upper traps in a more optimal position to stretch and contract.
Just be sure to keep your lower back locked and flat, not bowed forward.
The photo I used in OMYM of me shrugging was from the front, so you can’t see that I’m leaning forward.
These days I’m using separate cable handles for shrugs, so I step back slightly. That allows me to pull slightly back as well as up.
It’s a totally different—and better—feel than moving the weight straight up and down.
