Throughout my tenure as Iron Man magazine’s Editor in Chief, I was always observing and analyzing the top bodybuilders’ workouts.
I figured that even if they’re on steroids, I may still be able to learn some things about building muscle—although I must admit that the difference in gains from adding drugs to the mix is mind-blowing…
That’s not an endorsement, only an observation.
One of the most massive Mr. Olympias reinforced my beliefs in the power of stretch partials—which is now being verified by science.
I’m talking about eight-time Mr. O Ronnie Coleman. I took a workout-by-workout look at his training in the Beyond X-Rep ebook: “Analyzing Mr. Olympia’s Workout From an X-Rep Perspective.”
It’s an eye-opening chapter. I noted that most of his exercises consisted of partial-reps only—like bench presses on which he only did the bottom half of the stroke to emphasize stretch.
Even on squats and front squats. Here are a few video grabs of the latter exercise that shows his stretch-partial range of motion—with 405 pounds!…
Coleman had an innate ability to take an exercise and do it in a way that got him the most mass development. Arnold had that same ability.

It may have you adding some stretch partials, as well as loads of new muscle.
