All guys want big arms—the bulging biceps, the massive sweeping triceps stretching the sleeves of your T-shirt…
Endless work on all types of curls and extensions often fails to get the gargantuan guns that we muscleheads are after.
Yes, one reason is overtraining. Often, bodybuilders forget about all of the ancillary work the biceps, triceps, and forearms get during other exercises.
For example, biceps get hit during pulling exercise, like pulldowns, pull-ins, chins, and rows. Sometimes there’s more biceps work than back.
And all types of pressing, from decline bench presses to pushups, works the triceps. Sometimes all it takes to get a growth spurt in your arms is a reduction in direct arm work.
But one big-arm tactic is often ignored. Think about this…
If you get your upper back, like the teres major and lats, to grow, the added muscle will push against your arm and make it look bigger and wider, especially from the side.
Kind of like putting a tennis ball in your armpit. Sure you can walk around with a ball under your arm instead, but it will be weird when you reach for a can of soup at the grocery store and the ball goes bouncing down the aisle.
I believe that building the teres and lats is one reason pullovers help make my arms look bigger.
Yes, they also train the long head of the triceps, but the lat and teres stretch helps build size in the origin and insertion of those back muscles.
Just something to consider. It’s another reason I end my Old Man, Young Muscle workout with dumbbell pullovers. Or you can hang out at the courts and steal a few tennis balls for your armpits.
