Q: The abbreviated workout you showed in your last newsletter is excellent. I’ve already tried it, and it’s perfect for me when I’m not up to the full OMYM workouts. One question: You mentioned that science has shown isolation exercises to be best, but in your ebooks you have dumbbell decline presses or cable chest presses as ideal for pecs. Both are compound exercises. Have you switched to cable flyes for more isolation?
A: I remember being on a Zoom call with Mr. America and biomechanics expert Doug Brignole, and I asked him that same question…
If isolation is best, why decline presses as opposed to decline flyes?
His answer was that with flyes, whether you’re using dumbbells or cables, your biceps are a limiting factor…
It takes too much nervous energy to hold the static elbow position, whereas the triceps on a press are more neutral and work more naturally in concert with the pectorals, the prime mover.
Is that splitting hairs? Maybe. I like both. In fact, I often use cable flyes as my add-on exercises after an STX sequence on cable chest presses.
Don’t get too hung up on the minutiae of training. As long as you’re emphasizing an ideal that has most of the Top-5 Ideal-Exercise Factors on page 10 in OMYM2, you’ll grow.

Till next time, train hard—and smart—for BIG results.
