Here’s an excellent, articulate quote from trainer Borge Fagerli, creator of Myo Reps (@borgefagerli):
The truth is, exercise science isn’t black and white; it’s a spectrum of variability. Statements like “bro splits don’t work” or “low or high volume is inferior” make blanket claims that ignore individual physiology and inherent complexities.
Research, while invaluable, doesn’t always give us definitive answers. Instead, it provides pieces of the puzzle, helping us understand what might work for us, not what must.
In fact, you can find research to verify just about any type of training—from rest/pause to high reps to low reps to long rests between sets…
It’s one reason that I consider the workouts in my ebooks templates for you to tailor to your individual genetics, lifestyle, and time availability.
For example, I was asked if it would be acceptable to do the first phase of an STX rest/pause sequence with 10 reps instead of 15.
My answer: Try it. You can do anything you want. That can make it more interesting—just be cautious…
The best training protocol is what will work for you at the moment and keeps you consistent.
Use experimentation for excitation and more mass creation.
Note: Find more about training evolution, experimentation, and variability in the discussions between myself and Mr. America and biomechanics expert Doug Brignole in Never Stop Growing. Complete workouts designed around our mass-building findings and protocols included.
Till next time, train hard—and smart—for BIG results.
