I can be lazy. Watching TV with my wife the other night, I saw her phone charging in the kitchen, so I called it…
She got up to answer, and I said, “Hey, while you’re up, can you get me some water—and ice would be great?”
She got me water—with ice—but it wasn’t the only thing cold the rest of the night…
When it comes to my workouts, however, using the best exercises beats back laziness almost always, even if it takes more setup time…
For example, since I recently purchased a home cable machine, the one I talk about getting in Old Man, Young Muscle, I’ve found that the seated cable chest press—on a bench, as in the photo on the left—is an ideal alternative to dumbbell decline presses…
But I have to pull over a bench, position it just right, and then get on the bench without dislocating my shoulders. That takes time and effort…
On the other hand, the standing cable chest press, pictured at the right, requires almost zero setup time…
If the cables are at the right height, I just grab the handles, position my body and go…
But which exercise pictured above is most ideal? The bench version wins…
It gets the nod 90 percent of the time if I’m choosing between the two. Why? Because my torso is locked in place on the bench…
That means I can focus completely on driving with my pecs on every rep…
With the standing version, stabilizing muscles fire as I try to hold my torso at the proper angle…
And when the reps start getting hard, my upper body wants to raise up, and then move forward to get momentum…
I mentioned in a previous newsletter that seated cable chest presses and dumbbell decline presses are about even on the ideal-exercise scale. They both have some positives and negatives…
The standing cable chest press is a notch or two down from those ideal moves. It’s not bad, just a little less efficient due to the instability it presents…
