Q: I’ve been dating someone for about six months, so my training has been off and on. My arms shrink the fastest, but I’m starting to wonder if muscles even matter. I’ve been at this smaller size since I met her, and she says she’d rather I not work out and spend more time with her. Should I just train every so often to maintain what little size I have left? Any insight?
A: Not to sound like sexist pigs, but sometimes (most of the time) women don’t say what they mean—or maybe they just say what they think is nicer for your to hear. When it comes to girls and muscles, Steve has a story that’s similar to yours—but with a surprising end that may help you with your dilemma…
I was on break from college after a few weeks of grueling exams, so my training had been sporadic. Being a hardgainer type, I’d lost a lot of size. I was home and hooked up with an old girlfriend, a gorgeous blonde cheerleader, whom I’d dated off and on for about a year. She always asked why I worked out so much, said muscles didn’t matter to girls, and that she liked the way I looked. (Sound familiar?)
One night I took her out to a nightclub to go dancing. I went to the bar to get us some drinks, and I ran into a friend who had recently won the Mr. Texas. The guy was in incredible shape, with his shirt sleeves barely containing his gigantic vein-streaked arms. I shook his hand and congratulated him, exchanged a few more pleasantries, and then went back to my girl at the table.
She’d been watching me, and as soon as I sat down next to her, the first words out of her mouth were, ‘Who was that guy with the arms you were talking too?’ I turned to look at her, and she had that glazed look in her eyes—exactly like my dog when she watches me eat a steak.
I told her he was Mr. Texas, blah, blah—a good friend of mine. ‘Oh,’ she squealed, ‘Can I meet him?’
To make a long story short, I introduced my muscles-aren’t-important girlfriend to Mr. Texas, she squealed and giggled some more, kept squeezing his arms, and I had a rotten night. By the way, the guy—how should I put it kindly—was not a handsome lad. It was all about the arms!
The good thing that came out of it was that I had some of the best arm workouts of my life during the weeks after that (talk about fury-fueled intensity!). In fact, it was one of the inspiring incidents that led to my relentless pursuit of finding the most efficient way to build muscle—3D Positions of Flexion—which has helped my hardgainer arms blossom to a decent size (when I train intensely and consistently, that is)…
It also taught me that sometimes gals don’t say what they mean—or maybe they just don’t realize how tantalizing a pair of ham-like arms are when they see them in real life up close.
Till next time, train hard—and smart—for BIG results.
