Q: In a recent newsletter, you showed a photo of incline flyes. I know you’re not a fan of incline presses, but do you still think incline flyes are valuable for some upper-pec mass?

A: I do, but at a low angle—around 30 degrees.

Trebs, et al. found moving higher to 45 degrees activates way too much front deltoid.

That makes sense, as the higher the angle, the more your upper arm travels toward your chin rather than your breast bone.

Remember, you want the active lever to pull directly toward the insertion of the target fibers. Notice how the upper chest fibers angle only slightly upward…

So a low angle will keep your upper arms traveling in the optimal arc, moving toward the upper-fibers’ insertion point.

While I recommend doing the ideal exercise first, dumbbell decline presses, you can follow with 30-degree incline flyes for some upper pec stretch.

Of course, flat flyes will also activate the upper-pec fibers in addition to overall chest mass. But if you want a specialized upper move, a 30-degree incline will get you in the right groove.
