Q: You’re in your 60s and look pretty muscular. Do you use testosterone-replacement therapy? I’m in my 50s and thinking about it.
A: I’m not on anything except natural supplements, which I discuss in Chapter 10 of Old Man, Young Muscle.
One is an herb, Tongkat Ali, which may or may not help increase T. I’ve seen studies that say yay and others say nay.
I do know that when I don’t take it, my energy and libido take a dive.
Could be the old placebo effect—or not. It seems to work, so I keep using it.
I have my testosterone checked yearly. That checkup is coming up in a few weeks. Last year my T levels were normal. If they are low, I’m not sure if I will take the plunge or not. I’m not fond of the idea…
I’ve been drug-free my entire life, despite one foray into Dianabol for a few weeks in my 20s. Dianabol is a synthetic form of testosterone that you take orally…
Didn’t do much—probably because I’m chicken, so the dosage was low and I didn’t stay on it…
Podcaster and stand-up comedian Joe Rogan is a big proponent of T therapy. I don’t know if his levels were low or if he simply uses it to look and feel better as he ages. He’s 55…
I do know that he trains very hard—perhaps too hard. That can shoot up cortisol and deplete testosterone, especially when you’re older, which makes muscle building difficult.
As you get older, the harder it gets—well, some things get “harder.”

Boost T with Tongkat Ali
This is an herb grown primarily in the Malaysian rainforests. Multiple studies show that “long jack,” as it’s called, increases libido, possibly due to jacked testosterone. With only 100 milligrams a day, a long jack group “gained more muscle and strength than the placebo group.” No report of whether any subjects lost control of their hips at the gym. We take it and can vouch for its powerful anabolic and “wood-abolic” effects. (Steve’s wife is frequently in hiding—LOL.)
