Here’s an interesting quote from Drug-Free Mr. Universe and biomechanics expert Doug Brignole on those group workouts when multiple trainees get together in a commercial gym to outdo each other on a lift like deadlifts…

It’s no different from a group of guys getting together and saying ‘I can do this; can you do this?’ Maybe out of the five, four can and one drops out. Then they go to the next level—a little bit harder. Then another guy drops out. So the idea is, who can do them all. That determines who the king of the mountain is. This gets down to a philosophical issue. In other words, I cannot determine what things people should be proud of. I’m a bodybuilder. I’m a biomechanics person who understands how to get the most load [on a muscle] with the greatest safety. So I see very little value in trying to establish my prowess by doing certain things physically that other people cannot do. To me, that’s meaningless. It’s similar to when someone asked me the other day, ‘What did your arm measure in that one photo?’ I don’t know. I don’t measure. It’s irrelevant. The only reason you would care is because you’re going to compare it to someone else’s measurement.

I agree—but that’s just me. As Doug said, it’s perspective—each to their own. Whatever floats your boat and keeps you training…

Just understand that those group lifting sessions are more about show than stimulation to grow….

Like Doug, I’m training to build muscle as safely and efficiently as possible. The older you get, the less time there is to waste…

Sure those group sessions can be fun when you’re young. But they can also be highly dangerous. Be very wary of ego lifting. It can ruin your workouts for a long, long time—maybe forever…

My shoulder is still screwed up from bench press singles and doubles during a powerlifting phase in my younger days.
