Mentzer often observed that you should not go beyond the LEAST amount required to stimulate an optimal mass increase. Anything more is a waste of effort and highly counterproductive.
For me, at age 63, four sets per muscle at each workout is all I need—sometimes less. And I mitigate damage by strategically incorporating Speed Sets with standard-tempo sets—fewer “garbage negatives.”
Strive to avoid overtraining and over-damaging your muscles so that you don’t over-stress your recovery. It’s essential in order for you to maximize hypertrophy.
