Then there’s the time Mike Mentzer lost a bet and had to cart Casey Viator around the gym in a makeshift rickshaw. Mike’s Heavy Duty belly shirt was not part of the bet. Good times at Gold’s…
Okay, it’s really Mentzer doing heavy shrugs on a bench press machine with Viator riding and threatening to whip him with a towel if he doesn’t get 10 reps.
Both of these dudes had incredibly thick physiques, and both trained with low volume and high intensity. Here’s Casey at around age 20 after he won the Mr. America training under Nautilus machine creator Arthur Jones…
Both men had insane genetics for bodybuilding—each fairly huge at age 20…
Here’s Mentzer at age 20…
But they beefed up those genes with science-based training. And both were proponents of the pre-exhaustion method….
For example, when Mentzer was training for the ’80 Mr. Olympia, he used a modified Pre-Ex method.
It was higher-rep isolation followed by lower-rep compound with very little rest between exercises, on point with the STX method for optimal fast-twitch fiber recruitment.
There’s a complete Mentzer-inspired pre-ex STX workout in OMYM, Chapter 9, page 68. It’ll only take you about 35 minutes three days a week, complete with critical stretch-loading emphasis for max hypertrophy.
Till next time, train hard—and smart—for BIG results.
