Here’s a controversial quote from hypertrophy researcher Chris Beardsley (@chrisbeardsley):
We always reach muscular failure because we hit our maximum tolerable perception of effort. However, many feelings can contribute to perceived effort. When the sensation of innervation is the primary contributor (as occurs in single-limb, single-joint exercises), then we reach high levels of motor unit recruitment. When any other factors contribute (as occurs in exercises with more muscle mass [involved]), we reach lower levels of recruitment.
That’s exactly why most of the ideal exercises are isolation, and many are single-limb: You get higher levels of motor unit recruitment by isolating a single muscle…
If you can’t use or don’t want to use single-limb, at least use dumbbells or separate cable handles for independent resistance, allowing for more effective fiber recruitment.
Till next time, train hard—and smart—for BIG results.
