As I get older, I become more focused on looking built in clothes rather than shirtless. That’s because I resemble a white raisin on the beach rather than a Greek statue.

Seriously, even if you’re not old, certain muscles are important for that bodybuilder look like in clothes—like forearms and—one most bodybuilders neglect—neck.

A thicker neck will make you look more athletic in your dress shirts, polos, and T-shirts, no doubt about it.

That’s why recently I’ve been tacking on a direct neck exercise at many workouts.

You’ll not only look better with some beef on your neck, you’ll feel better too. Neck work has been shown to significantly reduce chronic neck pain, often caused by looking down at your phone texting and scrolling.

And it doesn’t take a lot of time. In a study, Conley, et al. rounded up recreational athletes training four days a week. One group performed all the basics, including deadlifts, rows and shrugs…

The other group added three sets of neck extensions…

Results: The neck-work group got significant increases in neck strength and girth, while the no-neck-work group saw no increases whatsoever.

Researchers concluded that even including squats, rows, shrugs, etc. in a program is no guarantee of neck size and strength.

If you don’t have a neck harness, you can do this face-down on a bench—even without weight. Higher reps work well for the neck muscles…

I like one or two sets of neck extensions, then I flip over and do the opposite direction—what I call neck curls.

I probably won’t be mistaken for an NFL lineman, but I’m determined to avoid the nickname Old Noodle Neck.
