Ultimate Combo to Grow Wide—and Catch Eyes

Q: My girlfriend likes to critique my body when I ask. She’s got a good eye for proportion—and if I look good for her, I get the benefits, if you know what I mean—LOL. Lately, she’s been saying my shoulders are too flat. I need more roundness and broadness. What do you suggest?

A: When you think about it, most barbell and dumbbell shoulder exercises are lacking—inefficient to say the least, so you need a real delt-stretching combo to grow…

Presses tend to work more front delt than the side heads—and it’s the middle heads’ beefiness that will give you a broader look.

Dumbbell lateral raises have zero resistance at the bottom, and, due to gravity and a leverage shift, the weight is too heavy at the top.

Dumbbell upright rows have a similar problem as laterals—zero resistance at the bottom and too much at the top, although the discrepancy isn’t as severe as with DB laterals.

So what do we suggest? We’re with Mr. America Doug Brignole who sings the praises of one-arm cable laterals. The resistance curve is almost perfect. Here’s a shot of Doug doing them…

Cable laterals load the stretch position, when the arm is across the torso, and the leverage shift isn’t severe so you get a good contraction of the medial head at the top…

We suggest you kneel next to the low cable. Standing can increase the leverage shift too much because of the angle of the cable as you raise the handle. It’s best to be pulling out AND up…

To make it even better, when you get near failure on a set of one-arm cable laterals, immediately launch into one-arm cable upright rows with the same arm and weight….

That’s excellent pre-exhaustion for shoulder broadness, an ultimate rounder-delt pounder. A combo to grow wide.
