At left, Berry de Mey shows why he was one of the best in the body biz back in the ’80s…
On the right is Berry now at age 60, showing how he answers the door to scare the crap out of dudes picking up his daughter for a date.
At 6’ tall, he competed at around 225 pounds in the ‘80s. Known as the Flexing Dutchman, de Mey was a fierce competitor with an aesthetic edge. In fact, at his first Mr. Olympia in 1985, he placed a respectable sixth, besting Tom Platz and Bob Paris.
He made his best showing at the ’88 Olympia, placing third behind Lee Haney and Rich Gaspari. Lee Labrada was fourth…
We had him on the cover of Iron Man numerous times. He was the perfect cover model with Nordic good looks and a physique desired by women and admired by men. Okay, desired by a few men too…
So why was his career so short? In 1989, he was gearing up to finally win the Olympia. With six months to go, he was bench pressing 440 pounds. As he lowered the bar for rep two, he was distracted by the sound of someone ripping a newspaper…
Unfortunately, it wasn’t a newspaper, it was his right pectoral. His bodybuilding career was pretty much done for. He did compete after he healed, but his physique was never the same…
Berry no longer uses mega-poundages for obvious reasons—he’s much older and smarter now.
If you’ve been reading this newsletter, you probably know where this is going: You don’t need mega poundages to build muscle, and you should emphasize the safe, biomechanically correct exercises to sculpt your physique. Heavy barbell bench presses ain’t one of them (see the new ebook below)…
Till next time, train hard—and smart—for BIG results.
