A few newsletters ago, I had photos of the first Mr. O Larry Scott in his prime and later in life after he decided to see if he could reshape his biceps—higher peak—by removing preacher curls from his arm workout and emphasize “peak-contraction” exercises. Results…
Mr. America/Mr. Universe Doug Brignole says there are explanations—Scott did not reshape his biceps. Doug said this…
If you flex your biceps while your arm is alongside your body, as in a front-double-biceps pose), it has a different shape than if you flex your biceps with your arm in front of your body. The two photos of Larry Scott are in those two different flex positions.
Also, I’ve noticed that muscles tend to change their shape to a small degree, with aging. Notwithstanding likely muscle damage along the way, some muscles seem to change their shape over time.
We see evidence of this in photos of bodybuilders like Robby Robinson. Apart from being obviously smaller, the shape of his biceps—and other muscles—seems to have changed. And he’s not the only bodybuilder in which I’ve noticed this.
Obviously, these factors would create the illusion that muscle-shape changes occurred as a result of changes in training.
Old muscle can definitely change shape from the younger version—at least according to my sagging pecs. Or maybe that’s just loose skin.
With Doug’s experienced observations countering those of researchers like Chris Beardsley and Brad Schoenfeld, Ph.D., I have my own opinion—and here it is…
Despite Doug’s objections, I still use contracted- and stretch-position add-on exercises—that’s after I emphasize his ideal ones. My 35-minute workouts (pages 60 and 61) as well as a printable POF exercise chart (pages 42 and 43) are included in Old Man, Young Muscle.

Plus, they initiate no growth hormone response—meaning all their specialized sets are basically worthless!
