Q: I know you like to be in shape for the summer. You look ripped in pics. When do you start paring down winter fat, and how do you do it?
A: I try not to get too fat over winter, but some extra adipose is inevitable with Brandy, Egg Nog, and See’s Candy as an after-dinner chaser most nights.
Kidding—about the candy. I usually start whittling in late February. But I do it slowly…
In the beginning, I simple try to eat cleaner—few or no chips at our favorite Mexican restaurant on weekends, for example. And margaritas down to one…
Speaking of alcohol, if you drink often, it’s a big contributor to your spare tire. Your body has to burn off the alcohol as an energy source first, so any other calories you take in are converted to you know what as your body metabolizes the booze.
That’s why I limit my wine intake during the week as well, sometimes eliminating it for a week at a time. Alcohol can crush testosterone, and I need all of that I can get at 63.
Having normal test levels helps the fat-burning, muscle-building processes. Although it’s not necessary for my libido, since my wife usually hides anytime I disrobe…
For me it’s simply cleaner eating and less alcohol in the beginning. I’m not a big fan of eating in general—curse of the ectomorph. I’d say the hardest part is knowing that I’ll look like this in clothes once I get ripped…
Okay, maybe not. But that’s how I feel sometimes. It’s a quandary—I will look bigger out of clothes due to muscle definition and vascularity, but I’ll feel smaller dressed because of less fat mass.
Around late March, I’ll begin my intermittent-fasting program two or three days a week as outlined in The Muscle-On, Belly-Gone “Diet” ebook, which is FREE when you add Old Man, Young Muscle to your mass-building library (shameless plug).
Achieving low body fat is worth it. Seeing abs and arm veins keeps me in the muscle-sculpting game. And it feels great once I’m in lean shape. (Can you tell I’m trying to psyche myself up?)
