It’s not that lower volume in itself is better…but that you now tap into greater degrees of high-threshold motor units by knowing you are doing fewer sets…eliminating sets that serve only to interfere with your recovery and subsequent progress.

Doing fewer sets flips your mindset to, “I only have a few chances to stimulate growth.” Your focus is heightened and every single set is more effective at flipping the hypertrophy switch.
On the other hand, doing more sets has you holding back, and those less-than-stellar sets only cause growth-leaching damage to pile up unnecessarily, slowing your progress.
