No, Mike and Ray Mentzer were not taxidermied and shellacked—these are figurines someone created of the high-intensity duo. Amazing work…
Mike burst onto the bodybuilding scene when he won the Mr. America in 1976; Ray won it in 1979—the same time that Steve attended one of his seminars in San Antonio, Texas.
It was there that Ray said something which has stayed with Steve to this day. Ray commented that he could make a 30-pound dumbbell feel like a 60-pounder…
That was a reason that the brothers used pre-exhaustion—an isolation exercise followed immediately by a multi-joint move for the same muscle. It worked (photo by Wayne Gallasch)…
They believed you should feel the target muscle you’re training…
Remembering that advice is one way that Steve re-muscled his physique in his sparse home gym with only a 50-pound PowerBlock dumbbell set and an adjustable bench (see the cover photo of the diet ebook below)…
Interesting side note: Mike died at age 49 in 2001 of a heart attack, and Ray died two days later of kidney complications. Strange stuff—brothers dying so young only two days apart…
Both are legendary bodybuilders whose training methods and ideas still permeate bodybuilding today.
Till next time, train hard—and smart—for BIG results.
