Here’s a quote from my friend elite trainer Vince McConnell on slow-twitch exhaustion, the key mass-building method in Old Man, Young Muscle:
The principles of STX are productive for the majority. They work lower rep ranges AFTER ‘the table is set’ with [the higher-rep] initial set. Then it’s two to three ‘sub sets’ of lower reps. That’s it for that exercise. It’s not fatigue-seeking, it’s actually managing fatigue efficiently while hitting the high-threshold motor units in a way that spares the joints, connective tissue and spine with the “right” [or ideal] exercises as your base. Then you can do one or two additional exercises as “auxiliary” to complete the task AND sustain interest. Simple and productive.
