Q: I’ve added a lot of muscle using Pre-Ex 3X and modified pre-ex. I must commend you for coming up with it. One problem I have is with leg extensions. They hurt my knees when I do them first. Funny that squats don’t hurt me. Leg extensions are the only quad isolator. What should I do first instead?
A: We didn’t come up with pre-exhaustion. That honor goes to the late Bob Kennedy, publisher of MuscleMag…
It’s a fantastic mass-training method because it eliminates the weak-link muscle, like triceps on bench presses. Doing a flye move first pre-fatigues the pecs. Then when you do benches, your fresh triceps can push your chest further past the growth threshold.
Pre-Ex also crunches more work into less time when you superset an isolation move with a compound exercise. That DENSITY training style is a known muscle-size accelerator as well as growth hormone stimulator. GH has anabolic properties AND it burns fat…
Okay, back to your problem. The solution is one we’ve recommended before, but not in the Pre-Ex context. We suggest you do front squats then immediately move to back squats. It’s v

The front squats will more directly hit your quads because your torso must remain perfectly upright. Then the back squats will allow more liberal use of your glutes and lower back to further blast your quads…
We recommend around five reps of front squats followed immediately by about 8 reps on back squats; rest 45 seconds, then hit it again…
To make the front squats even more quad specific, do them X-centric style: Lower in six seconds and drive up in one.
You might only get three or four X-centric reps, but that’s okay. You will better isolate your quads and also produce extra trauma in the myofibrils…
Added bonus: Fat-loss blast! The repair of those micro tears in the days ahead will help you burn fat. How’s that? The process requires energy, which raises your metabolism—and studies show that the repair process is fueled by blubber. (It’s a big reason we use X-centric sets often when we’re trying to get ripped.)
Pre-Ex can ignite your mass and fat-burning jets. Prepare for beach-body blast-off.
Till next time, train hard—and smart—for BIG results.
