Moment of Bodybuilding Zen 31: Casey Viator’s Colorado Experiment

Back in 1973, Arthur Jones, the creator of Nautilus machines and considered the “father of high-intensity training,” decided to prove to the world that his short, intense muscle-building methods worked…

Casey Viator, before and after 1973 Colorado Experiment

He took Casey Viator, the youngest Mr. America winner (1971 at age 19), and put him in a controlled environment for four weeks. He performed only 12 high-intensity, 30-to-40-minute workouts during that one-month experiment. Results?

According to the tests conducted by Dr. Elliot Please and other doctors at [Colorado State University], Viator gained more than 45 pounds of bodyweight while losing about 19 pounds of fat, which means that his gain in muscular mass was more than 60 pounds.

That is unreal, but there are a few caveats: Casey was regaining muscle—much easier to do than building muscle from scratch due to “muscle memory.” Also, we have reports that he used anabolic steroids and did a few other things to enhance his gains (for that full report, see Chapter 7: The Colorado Experiment Exposed: 60 Pounds of Muscle in 4 Weeks?, starting on page 54 of The MMX Fast Mega-Mass Workouts ebook).

Do those things discredit Viator’s amazing gains? To a degree—but here’s something to consider: Arthur Jones participated in the experiment along with Viator—and he did NOT use drugs, staying on the straight and narrow to prove his point without any doubts. His “clean” results?

Jones gained almost 20 pound of muscle within 22 days—he had to drop out due to a chest cold. Yes, he made those amazing gains while fighting off sickness. Even more impressive, he was almost 50 years old at the time.

Arthur Jones and Casey Viator

Interesting that Jonathan used a similar three-days-per-week high-intensity training program, 10-Week Size Surge, early in his training career. Completely drug-free, he gained 20 pounds of muscle. His before and after photos, taken 10 weeks apart, are on the cover and inside that ebook…

Size Surge Workout 2.0 cover

In our opinion, The 10-Week Size Surge program is one of the best mass-building protocols to use during the winter. If you use it, you could look like a completely different person when spring hits.

For more on exactly how Jonathan did it, with his workouts, diet, and measurement results, as well as more on the Colorado Experiment, including Viator’s and Jones’ exact routine they used in 1973, get the Size Surge ebook HERE.

Till next time, train hard—and smart—for BIG results.
