Q: Your Old Man Young Muscle ebook is your best work by far. I’ve got most of your books and ebooks, and this one tops the list. It’s pushed my gains to new heights at 45 years old. You do a great job of distilling Doug Brignole’s information and exercises, intertwining them with your own. My question is, should I get Doug’s book? It’s pricey.
A: Doug’s book, The Physics of Resistance Exercise, is a 400-page reference you will go back to again and again.
He does an incredible job of laying out all of the factors of productive, efficient exercise for each muscle, and he does it in a way that’s understandable and applicable to your workouts.
Getting a grasp on biomechanics alone is well worth the price. You’ll learn why many of the so-called big moves—like barbell squats, barbell bench presses, and rows—are inferior for engaging the most fibers in the target muscles for optimal hypertrophy as compared to other “ideal” exercises.
He also explains the 16 factors that determine the efficiency, productivity, and safety of resistance exercise. No one—not physiologist, scientist or athletic trainer—has ever done this. Quite amazing, really.
Ground-breaking? Revolutionary? Practical? Controversial?
Yes on all of the above. And Doug has many bodybuilders, scientists and Ph.D.s onboard, with that number growing each day as the book becomes a bodybuilding best-seller. It’s that good.
The bonuses in its pages include a look at how many of the exercises evolved from the early strongman days, the ego-centric gym culture, how muscles grow, the myth of muscle “shaping,” and balance/core exercises.
That’s in addition to uncoupling each muscle’s function to zero in on the best exercises—even transverse abdominis and internal and external obliques.
The uniqueness of Doug’s bodybuilding résumé plus his extensive biomechanics and physics knowledge, make this book a must-have for every weight-training enthusiast, whether you’re a competitive or hobby bodybuilder, personal trainer, athlete or weekend warrior.
Keep in mind that Doug won the 2019 AAU Drug-Free Mr. Universe at age 59 using the exercises he deems ideal, which he explains in this book.
I made an incredible transformation at age 61 once I began emphasizing his ideal exercises in my bare-bones home gym—I didn’t even have a barbell or cables, only 50-pound PowerBlock dumbbells, an adjustable bench, and a doorway chinning bar.
One of my favorite bodybuilders from back in the day, Richard Baldwin, “The Thinking Man’s Bodybuilder,” recently did a video review of Doug’s book. Richard is a 1979 Mr. America winner (MW)…
He’s also a Ph.D. and currently a professor. Here’s what he said about it…
It’s a revolutionary work that could change bodybuilding for the better. A lot of the current exercises are a waste and a danger. Doug’s book tells you how to focus on the best exercises with the best resistance curve and the least possibility of injury. If you follow his prescription, you’ll have the most productive and safe workouts possible to produce the muscle you’re after.
So to answer your question: Yes, you should get it. It’s worth double or triple the price. And it may just double or triple your muscle gains.
