Here’s a classic candid shot of Arnold, his best friend Franco Columbu, and Sylvester Stallone, a.k.a. Rocky, on the outdoor training platform at World Gym in Venice, California, circa 1980.

Arnold is explaining “the tuck back,” a technique necessary to wear the shorty shorts that were in style at the time. Franco seems to be puzzled. Hmm.
It’s off-season, but Arnold still has those massive arms straining the seams of his polo shirt, not to mention the charisma to charm everyone, especially the ladies.
And speaking of abilities, we’ve also mentioned Arnold’s ability to focus almost robotically on the target muscle throughout every rep of every set—like the Terminator: “Gom wit me if you vant to grow.” (Our Arnold impression is not great.)
Controlling your reps and zeroing in on the working muscle can make your sets much more effective. Research shows that slower, no-momentum, muscular-tension reps enhance fast-twitch muscle activation—and that means more growth…
You can make it even better with slow-twitch exhaustion (STX), ideal exercises, and stretch-loading add-on mass moves. For more on all of that, as well as efficient mass workouts, see Old Man, Young Muscle.
Till next time, train hard—and smart—for BIG results.
