I’ve been harping on symmetry, proportion, and aesthetics lately. And I’ve seen some impressive representations of that on social media, such as Instagram…
One that comes to mind is Joesthetics…
While he’s got plenty of muscle, his structure is not “crowded.” He still has an athletic look, like he could spike a volleyball hard enough to break a nose.
Of course, I also see things that make me shake my head in disgust—and I’m not talking about the huge bodybuilding gargoyles that stalk the top trophies now. They are doing what they have to in order to give the judges what they want (yes, I blame the judging)…
I’m talking about shooting oil into the muscles. This is the kind of crap that I do not understand…
Notice that this was posted by “GymFailNation.” I would agree: FAIL!
I remember a bodybuilder back in the ’80s, Benny Podda, who said he wanted to build his physique so big and gnarly looking that it made people vomit. Well, at least he had a goal…
I’d say the oil-injecting guy has him beat for a puke-worthy physique. Yes, symmetry and aesthetics are in the eye of the beholder, but come on. No one in their right mind thinks oil-man looks good…
I remember back when I was the editor of Iron Man magazine, some top competitors were starting to experiment with this stuff. One almost died injecting it into his pecs.
So it’s not only ugly but dangerous…
Shouldn’t “real bodybuilding” be about drug-free, oil-free, healthy physiques? Call me old, but I’m all for bringing back “physical culture.” At least the guys down at Muscle Beach in the ‘50s had physiques that could pick up women…

Build MASS with bodyweight training
One way you’re guaranteed to pack on stacks of muscle is through a process called muscle protein synthesis (MPS), which more than doubles 24 hours after an intense workout…
Until recently, MPS was only elevated when trainees would lift 70-90% of their one-rep max…
That’s not only dangerous for your joints, but it also sets you up for high injury risk every time you exercise…
It used to be believed that training with your own bodyweight couldn’t get you the same results as training with your 70-90% one rep max… Until NOW.
