When Arnold was in the gym for serious bodybuilding training, he always used a multi-angular approach—never just one exercise.
Yes, he relied on big, basic exercises, like barbell curls, but also stretch- and contracted-position moves, like incline curls and concentration curls—what I call Positions-of-Flexion training…
His was more of a “shotgun” approach, not narrowed down to those three position—but Arnold had a great instinct for exercises that worked. He seemed to inherently know that stretch-position moves did great things for muscle mass, which is now being verified by science…
From looking at his workouts, every muscle got stretch overload except one: quads.
Leg extensions do provide some stretch, but there are no photos of Arnold doing sissy squats anywhere. Could that be why many considered his thighs as a weak point? Maybe, maybe not—it could just be coincidence.
Heck, he even worked in stretch moves for the medial-delt head, like incline one-arm laterals…
He also liked one-arm cable laterals, often seated, which got the pulley closer to waist height, the ideal-exercise position—stretch more loaded, contraction less loaded.
The point is, Arnold was a big loaded-stretch advocate, and his mass gains reflected it.
