Arnold was known for his mass, but he could also hit some aesthetic poses, as in this Caruso shot of him in his Invisible Top Hat pose.
Caruso took some incredible shots of Arnold back in the day. His dramatic lighting highlighted the Oak’s thick physique, which was the product of his amazing instincts in the gym. And many of those instincts are being proven right by science…
For example, it’s no secret that he favored a lot of stretch work for almost every muscle. And even today, at age 73, he still emphasizes stretch loading on many exercises, like machine rows…
Notice how he focuses on the mid-back stretch—not to mention how his stretchy knee socks match his stretchy T….
He rolls forward at the start of each rep with a close grip to get that mid-back stretch that helps build an incredibly massive, etched back…
And on some exercises he often only did limited range of motion that emphasized stretch, as on T-bar rows.
A recent study found that stretch partials, like the bottom third of the stroke, built more mass than full-range reps or contracted-position partials.
Note: For a chart of stretch-position exercises for each muscle, as well as the ideal and contracted-position moves, see pages 42 and 43 of Old Man, Young Muscle.
Till next time, train hard—and smart—for BIG results.
