I’ve mentioned my recent re-aquaintance with Mr. America and Drug-Free Mr. Universe Doug Brignole (he won the latter contest at age 59)…

Emphasizing those precision moves is critical for packing on muscle as quickly as possible.

Another efficiency-of-effort concept he reminded me of is why dumbbells are better than a barbell in almost every case…

Instead, I’ll give you an example using the bench press…

With a barbell, your hands are locked on the bar outside of your shoulders. That means your pecs’ range of motion is limited.

Think about it. At the top the rep, your arms are angled away from your torso. They should be more perpendicular, or straight up, for full pectoral activation—as they are with dumbbells…

But here’s what really blew my mind, something Doug observed…

If the bar was greased, your hands would slide outward as you push.

To maximally stimulate your pecs, your arms should be pulling inward toward the breastbone, not pushing your hands out, which engages too much triceps…

With dumbbells, your upper arms do drive inward as you push, a much more pec-centric motion.

Details like that are critically important when it comes to getting the most mass bang for your effort buck in the gym.
