Here’s a rare shot of Joe Weider, Frank Zane, and Arnold running on the beach. Apparently Joe didn’t get the animal-print nut-hugger memo.
In reality, Joe didn’t fraternize with the bodybuilders much—unless there was a business angle. It was all about the Benjamins, which is what makes the above scenario so rare.
From what we gather, it was a photo shoot for a Weider product, and Joe was supervising. No doubt Arnold had a hand in talking Joe into rolling up his pants for a race, hoping Joe would trip and eat beach. Good stuff…
And just so you know that Joe was serious when it came to selling his products, here’s a shot of Arnold with Joe’s wife Betty on the beach. It’s one of many ads in which they appeared together. Sex-appeal marketing worked wonders for the Weider empire…
Joe also concocted the Weider Principles of bodybuilding—like the Instinctive Principle, a strange one because if you really trained by instinct in the gym, you’d leave…
Energy conservation is paramount for survival, not randomly lifting stuff for no reason.
We do applaud the Weider’s Muscle Confusion Principle, as it mirrors our change-to-gain mantra.
Arnold and Zane were big believers in “confusing” the muscles. For example, when they’d arrive at the gym, they’d yell, “Here we are at the ice cream shop”—and then they would surprise attack their confused muscles so they had no choice but to grow.
Okay, that was a dad joke—or maybe just a bad joke. Seriously, all the photos of Arnold’s and Zane’s various exercises and different workouts verify that they were onboard with changing things up often.
As we like to say: Change to gain—or remain the same. Just ask Arnold and Zane.
