Here’s Arnold checking his progress in the mirror prior to his 1980 Mr. Olympia comeback win. How do we know it was that year? Notice the banner: “Mentzer is Coming.” We don’t think that was warning people what was going on in the back room.
It was to motivate and remind Arnold that Mike Mentzer was coming to take the title—Mr. Heavy Duty was his number-one nemesis at the time.
And at that contest in Australia, they almost came to blows when Arnold told Mike he wouldn’t win because of Mike’s big belly. Ouch!
Arnold won, and Mentzer ended in fifth place. The contest is still considered the most controversial in its history, as many thought Arnold should not have won.
Here’s the lineup of the top guys: Boyer Coe, Arnold, Roger Walker, Roy Callender, Mike Mentzer, Frank Zane, Chris Dickerson…
Remember, bodybuilding is subjective—opinion. The winner is determined by what the judges see and think, not by hard numbers that can be measured by a stop watch or a poundage lifted.
Nevertheless, the loss caused Mentzer to retire from bodybuilding and go through a stint of psychosis. He eventually regained his sanity and restarted his business, writing and training people at Gold’s in Venice, California, only to die prematurely at age 49.
Of course, Arnold is alive and well, still training hard at age 74, sometimes falling asleep on the equipment or forgetting what exercise he’s doing…
Till next time, train hard—and smart—for BIG results.
