With spring right around the corner, it’s time for a lot of us to start thinking about easing into a fat-to-muscle plan—so you’re sure to have an eye-popping look that first warm day you peel off your shirt (you want jaws to hit the dirt)…
And yes, you can build muscle as you burn off fat—if you do it right. Check out these two pics taken a couple of months apart. Jonathan weighs close to the same in both, but he is obviously more ripped—and bigger in the second…
In previous newsletters, we’ve mentioned training efficiently with Positions of Flexion (3-way, full-range mass training) as well as key tactics to use to light the fat-to-muscle fuse (like X-centric, Power Pyramids, etc.). But diet is even more important…
You probably know the basic approach: around six protein-charged, low-glycemic (slow-carb) meals a day.
Also, GRADUALLY reducing calories, mostly via carb reductions, will keep fat loss moving, but there’s another very important key…
We mentioned minimizing the catabolic hormone cortisol while maximizing anabolic hormones like testosterone and GH (with efficient POF training). But there’s another shredding hormone that’s critical: LEPTIN. Here’s how we explain it in the X-treme Lean e-book…
Leptin is known as the anti-starvation hormone. If you have enough, your body doesn’t panic. If you don’t take precautions as you reduce calories, however, your body can produce less and less.
When leptin levels fall, the starvation mechanism shifts into high
gear, and your body halts fat burning and triggers a voracious appetite. Studies show that increasing calories, primarily with carbs, only one day a week during a diet can help normalize leptin levels, keeping the starvation mechanism in check and speeding the fat-burning process.
We have first-hand experience. During a peaking phase, Steve made a miscalculation and wasn’t upping his carbs like he thought one day a week. He was losing muscle and holding fat—not to mention craving a semi-sized chocolate sundae (Lol)…
Once he righted the ship with a legit high-carb day, fat began to melt away [more on that story and what he did in X-treme Lean].
The bottom line for maximizing this shredding hormone: Don’t forget a high-carb-day “cheat” once a week to cruise to an eye-popping, jaw-dropping physique.
