Mike Mentzer’s triceps were huge with a sweep that made his competitors weep—look at the above photo again. Sheesh!
Mike had a few favorite triceps exercises, like pushdowns and dips, and he rarely did more than two sets of any triceps exercise in his arm workouts, but…
What many don’t realize is that is triceps sweep was enhanced considerably by his lat training. Why? Because he included machine pullovers, dumbbell pullovers, or stiff-arm pulldowns.
Pulling the upper arms from overhead down to the torso engages the long head of the triceps—and that means more rear-arm sweep to stretch your T-shirt sleeves to the brink. Check out this shot of Mentzer’s incredible arms…
Interesting that for lats, Mike often did machine pullovers, which also train triceps, alternated with under-grip pulldowns, which also hit biceps. So he was getting a unique overall arm workout within his lat blast.
The moral is that for maximum triceps size and sweep, you should include some form of pullover or stiff-arm pulldowns. We often end our arm workout with dumbbell pullovers supersetted with seated hammer curls.
