This shot of Mike (kneeling) and Ray Mentzer on the beach is a classic, one that Steve had framed on his wall in his early 20s for motivation. The photo is by Wayne Gallasch of GMV Productions out of Australia (www.gmv.com.au).
Gallasch took some incredible pics, as well as video, of Ray and older brother Mike, together and solo, in their heyday—as well as training and posing videos. This black-and-white photo below is from a few years earlier. We’re not sure who took it, but it shows the potential of both Mentzer brothers…
The color beach shot that Gallasch took is later—from around the time Ray won the 1979 Mr. America—the same time that Steve attended one of his seminars in San Antonio, Texas.
It was there that Ray said something that stuck with Steve to this day: Ray commented that he could make a 30-pound dumbbell feel like a 60-pounder…
He said control and feeling the muscle contracting and elongating all the way through the stroke did amazing things for his mass gains.
Good to know—and a get-big tip we can all use right now, as many people are still training at home due to the coronavirus pandemic. And many, like us, are without a lot of poundage to work with…
All of that is the reason we expanded our Quick-Start Muscle-Building Guide to a 2.0 version with many mass tactics, like Ray’s, infused into complete home workouts in a big, updated section…
One section with the new workouts focuses on building muscle in a bare-bones home gym with only moderate poundages. For these programs all you need is an adjustable bench and dumbbells (we have only the 50-pound PowerBlock set, and it’s working great for us)…

Till next time, train hard—and smart—for BIG results.

Ripped Muscle Now: Harvard Research
Harvard researcher Dr. Dimitrios Stamou discovered an enzyme that eats bodyfat. It’s helping women and men lose up to 21 pounds on average in less than 28 days.
Plus, it can help bodybuilders get freaky ripped faster than ever (see the pic of the 69-year-old who is shredded at the link below).
Remember, when you’re leaner, you look bigger than ever… And best of all, your body can MAKEthis fat-blasting enzyme by eating these specific foods… and they taste GREAT.
Our colleague, the man who owned the gym that Lou Ferrigno trained at in “Pumping Iron,” turned us onto this. He’s using it himself to shed fat faster than ever, and he’s in his 50s. Get the details and see his photo HERE.
