This shot of Vince Gironda, the legendary Iron Guru, was taken in front of his gym back when he was almost 60 years old.
Even at that age, his aesthetic physique is one any guy would love to have…
We met Vince 20 years later, after he had closed his gym in Studio City, where he had trained many movie stars, including Clint Eastwood, and also the very first Mr. Olympia Larry Scott.
Vince was in his 80s when he would visit us at the Iron Man magazine offices, but he was still as brash as ever—and he always regaled us with his proven training methods…
Vince was a proponent of density training, which entailed moderate poundages but with short rests between sets. That style is how we train now, and it’s saved our joints while still building plenty of muscle.
One reason it works so well is because we start with a higher-rep set, which exhausts primarily slow-twitch fibers—and also spurs them into growth.
The set or two or three that follow, with only short rests between, quickly shifts the muscle into activating primarily fast-twitch growth fibers.
So it’s not only joint-safe, but a very efficient way to get a double-barreled growth effect—extreme hypertrophy in multiple fiber types.
It’s what we strive for, and why our workouts are only 35-minutes three days a week, alternating upper-body and lower-body sessions, as outlined in the new Old Man, Young Muscle ebook…
Applying that method to the ideal exercise for each muscle is the most efficient way to a full, muscular, pain-free physique.
Exciting stuff. For info on our workouts and more, see our new web page HERE.
Till next time, train hard—and smart—for BIG results.
