Q: Your discussion on body types was on point, but I’m surprised you didn’t mention Frank Zane, a classic ectomorph who won the Mr. Olympia.
A: I wouldn’t call Frank Zane a “classic ectomorph.” He does lean more ecto than most competitive bodybuilders, but he went from broad-shouldered stick to pretty damn thick—which had him hanging out with beauty Betty Weider on the beach…
Heck, most true ectomorphs would put cockroaches in their protein shakes to look like Zane’s teen shot above left—or eat a few live ones to frolic in the sand with Betty…
Even in that early teen photo, you can see Zane’s potential–much more than say Bruce Lee, who built some muscle, but only after putting in many years with the weights. He was still rail thin at the end of his life…
In contrast, Zane put on mass rather quickly in his 20s. I’m not sure when drugs came into play, but his mesomorphic tendencies were obvious…
We can no doubt say that the three-time Mr. Olympia was the most ectomorph-ish bodybuilder to ever win that contest—and to do it three times is quite a feat.
The above studio shot showcases his aesthetic mass in his prime—and he’s got plenty of muscle. Classic ectomorph? Nope.
Frank’s physique does give us dental-floss physiques some hope, however. Keep training, continue to experiment, and never give up.
Strive to get better and stay built for life. Proper, efficient workouts will help immensely.
