The Ultimate Quad-Mass Workout (no barbell squats)

Woman doing cable pull-through exercise

You saw a couple of examples of the new Postions-of-Flexion mass method applied to chest—without barbell bench presses, which are inefficient…

Remember, the new POF is no longer midrange + stretch + contracted; it’s now the ideal exercise + the missing positions. [Read more…]

New 6-minute Quad Workout

Steve demonstrating wall squats

Q: I tried your updated version of Mike Mentzer’s quad workout. Took less than six minutes. Great, but I don’t have a machine to end with cable squats. I did barbell squats after my two sets of sissies instead. Is that my best home-gym option? I have a squat rack. [Read more…]

Mentzer’s High Intensity: Right or Wrong? Part 5

Tom Platz doing freehand sissy squats

Yesterday I mentioned that Mentzer’s high-intensity workouts weren’t as efficient as they could’ve been due to not emphasizing the biomechanically ideal exercises as well as not applying the latest hypertrophy research (he died in 2001).

His methods could’ve been significantly better at stimulating mass with a few tweaks. Let’s review his go-to quad routine: [Read more…]

Q: I was wondering about Brignole squat [a.k.a. cable squat]. Do you think they are as good or better than sissy squats for quad mass? [Read more…]

Freak-Physique Quad Mass: Oak vs. The Quad Father

Tom Platz: sissy squats in top/bottom positions plus a freaky shot of his quads

Q: You mentioned that Arnold never used sissy squats [a quad stretch-position exercise]. I know that Tom Platz did them a lot. Do you think that may be one reason Platz had such freaky quads? Did Arnold miss the boat? [Read more…]

Quick Quad-Mass Question

A speed skater with big legs

Q: Your newsletter on sprinter thigh development was thought-provoking. I have to wonder how those athletes, along with oval-track cyclists, get such good development without full-range work. Cycling is especially puzzling because pedaling a bicycle is very short range.

A: Not to mention the quad development of speed skaters, who also use limited range of motion… [Read more…]

Unique Quad-Mass Move

Vince McConnell doing the Brignole squat

I mentioned sissy squats as my ideal quad exercise. Even without weight, it’s given my thighs a solid muscular look at age 62.

But since I recently purchase a cable machine, I’ve been rotating in another ideal move named after the guy who kind of invented it—biomechanics expert and Mr. Universe winner Doug Brignole… [Read more…]

Sissy Squat Substitute

Sissy squat finish

Q: I am blown away by your Positions-of-Flexion training. My gains have been unreal since I started using some of the three-position POF bodypart programs in the 3D Muscle Building e-book]. My question is that I’ve had knee surgery and therefore have some pain doing sissy squats [the stretch-position exercise for quads]. Is there a sissy squat substitute?

A: Ironically, we’ve had a couple of inquiries about finding a sissy squat substitute this week. The sissy squat is THE full stretch-position move for quads because the legs and torso remain on the same plane through the entire set. That provides full elongation in the quads in the bottom position. [Read more…]
