Ideal Midsection-Perfection Move

Erector spinea muscles - illustration

The title of this newsletter is a bit misleading because the muscle I’m talking about isn’t only located in your midsection…

It runs from your glutes all the way up to your neck, but only the lower part is visible. Which is why it’s often referred to as the “lower back.” [Read more…]

High-Low to Grow

Bodybuilder doing stiff-legged deadlifts

Q: I got the Power-Density Mass Workout 2.0 [with Super TORQ] after reading about all the great results people have had. Fantastic e-book! Might be your most interesting so far, and I’m already using your variation of Super TORQ. Wow! I’m sore to the core. Lol! My question is about stiff-legged deadlifts. You have it as a 30-20-15-10 sequence in your Modified Super-TORQ Program (page 49). Why not 40 or 50 reps on the first set, as with your other exercises?

A: From our vantage point, and experience, semi-stiff-legged deadlifts are one of the more dangerous exercises. One false move and your lower back can get whacked… [Read more…]

The I-Hate-Squats Workout

Jonathan Lawson squatting - The Dumbest Thing You can do if you want Extreme Muscle Mass

Q: I’m so frustrated. I constantly hear and read bodybuilders saying that you have to do free-bar squats to get big. You even put squats as the Ultimate Exercise for quads in your Ultimate Mass Workout e-book. It’s supposedly the best quad exercise and also stimulates overall mass gains. But I always get hurt when I squat heavy. My lower back craters, and I’m tired of it. Can’t I just use leg presses instead?

A: Some trainees simply aren’t built for free-bar squats. Because of leverage factors—usually long legs, the upper body pitches forward, which can put the lower back at risk. Heavy weights also compress the vertebrae. (Is it really beneficial to have 500 pounds sitting on your shoulders pushing down on your spine? Hmm.)

Anabolic Primer: One Move Gets You Huge

Screaming deadlifts

Q: I’ve been using the POF-Power/Super-TORQ Mass Workout [in the Power-Density Mass Workout 2.0 e-book]. My mass gains have shot up significantly over the past several weeks. Alternating heavy POF work with Super TORQ [high-rep work on only one exercise] is producing the best growth response in years. My question is about the optional deadlifts that begin the Friday workout. Doing 8-10 reps hurts my back, so I’m thinking about using only one 15-to-20-rep set instead. Is that okay, or should I just train through the pain?

A: First, never “train through the pain” of injury. More on your lower back in a moment. Let’s address the question of reps… [Read more…]

To Squat or Not

Jonathan Lawson squatting -To Squat or Not

Q: I’ve read a lot of your stuff over the years, especially when you had your daily training blog, so I have to ask: What’s the deal with squats? You’ve said before that they always injure you due to spine compression, and you’ll never do them again. But then I see them as the first quad exercise on leg day in some of your routines. You’re contradicting yourselves.

A: Not a contradiction; just another discovery. The way we used to do squats—building up to heavy weights over a number of sets with longer rests—produced more injuries than we care to remember. It was usually our lower backs that got jacked. As we found out the hard way over the years, having 350 pounds jamming down on your spine for even a few sets can do lots of cumulative damage. We’re living proof… [Read more…]
