Legend Used Stretch Partials for Super Size

Ronnie Coleman doing partial front squats

Throughout my tenure as Iron Man magazine’s Editor in Chief, I was always observing and analyzing the top bodybuilders’ workouts.

I figured that even if they’re on steroids, I may still be able to learn some things about building muscle—although I must admit that the difference in gains from adding drugs to the mix is mind-blowing… [Read more…]

New Stretch-Partials Mass Workout

Steve demonstrating incline overhead extensions

Q: I’ve followed you over the years. Your Positions-of-Flexion method has given me muscle gains beyond my expectations. Logical and precise. I have your Old Man, New Muscle and am using the full-POF Stretch-First Workout inspired by the great Mike Mentzer. With all the research on stretch-partials being best for growth, can I do the stretch exercise in those workouts with only partials? That exercise is first for each muscle, so it should be high reps. Do I just do 20 partials? [Read more…]

Best Exercises for the Stretch-Partials Mass Tactic

Jonathan doing dumbbell shrugs

Q: The study showing that partial reps in the stretch position are better for growth than full-range reps is intriguing. I’ve started using partials, and so far I’m impressed. I’ve noticed that they don’t work well on short-stroke exercises, like shrugs. Do you do them on those? [Read more…]

The Stretch-Partial Mass Workout

With the latest studies showing stretch-position loading for heightened hypertrophy, as well as a new one finding that stretch-partial reps produced more overall growth than full-range reps, it’s time to tweak our workouts… [Read more…]

Stretch Partials for More Mass (new study)

Illustration of leg extensions in the contracted position

Quite a coincidence. As I began writing this series on stretch overload, a new study appeared on the subject.

It was one I was hoping would eventually be done—although the trainees weren’t exactly to my specifications. The study… [Read more…]
