End Each Bodypart With a Mass Blast

Reverse curls, big arm - Another Way to Grow—With SS 2.0

Q: I’m getting ready to hit the Size Surge 2.0 program, and I really like the Phase 2 with the Mass Finisher [3-exercise Positions of Flexion followed by one set of a different exercise]. My question is, Can I use 3-set TORQ on that Mass Finisher, or should I stick to just one set using negatives or some of the other tactics you list in that chapter?

A: TORQ is tension-overload repetition quantity for those not familiar with it. You do three sets—30, 20, 15 reps—all sets to failure, same weight on each. Rest ONLY 45 seconds between sets. You get the high-end hypertrophic tension time of more than 60 seconds that most bodybuilders never get… [Read more…]

Progressive Overload Iso-Density for Muscle Immensity

Q: I’ve been using the 4X mass method for over a month with good gains–now noticeable muscle. I just tried it with the “downward-progression” style [adding weight each set so the reps drop—12-10-8-6], and it’s fantastic. I feel a new level of stimulation. You suggested using it on the big midrange exercises, but what about on the stretch and contracted ones? Can I use it on those too, or is that not advised?

A: For the uninitiated, downward-progression 4X (DP 4X) could be called “semi-heavy growth-threshold training.” Here’s the DP 4X drill… [Read more…]

High-End Combo to Grow: A Mass-Building Twist

Q: I’m getting some wicked pumps with Pre-Ex 3X. But I’ve been reading about your high-tension-time training methods. Do you think using higher reps on the pre-ex exercises is a good idea so I get 60 to 90 seconds of tension time?

A: Interesting idea. Optimal hypertrophic tension time is said to be 40 to 60 seconds, and many researchers extend that to 90 seconds. Most bodybuilders do sets that last only around 20 seconds… [Read more…]

New Muscle-Size Workout (1-set mass finisher)

Q: I just got the your Size Surge 2.0 e-book. Great programs and tons of motivation (Jonathan is a beast). My question is on the M4X workout you have listed with the finisher set added on. Instead of negative accentuated or pure negatives, could I do your 30-20-15 TORQ method instead? I really want to incorporate the upper hypertrophic-tension time [60-plus seconds] for more mass.

A: You could do that; BUT it’s a pretty large increase in total volume. That’s because instead of only one additional “finisher” set, you’re doing three. And instead of 7 extra reps, you’re doing 65! Quite a big difference… [Read more…]

Tension Time Bombs and Muscle-Size Add-Ons

Q: Do you think that a lot of intensity tactics work so well because they simply make a set last longer? For example, when you add X-Rep partials to the end of a set, you’re really extending the set for five to 10 more seconds and maybe getting into or at least closer to the best tension time for hypertrophy.

A: That’s an X-cellent observation. So many trainees go with their ego and train as heavy as possible, with sets lasting only about 20 seconds. That keeps them in the strength time zone… [Read more…]

Jump Start Your Lean Machine

Q: I’m planning to start the Fat-to-Muscle Workout right after the holidays. I understand the ideas—heavy midrange and stretch for micro trauma in muscle fibers to ramp up metabolism and high reps on contracted exercise for blood flow and growth hormone release. My question is, Can I use the 4X mass method on the contracted-position exercise at the end of each bodypart workout instead of high reps? Won’t 4X do the same thing as the two high-rep sets, but get even more blood flow with more sets?

A: Absolutely. In fact, a great plan to jump start your lean machine is to mix it up—do 4X at some workouts on the ending contracted-position exercises and the two high-rep sets at others. Why? Slightly different stimuli… [Read more…]

5 Critical Keys to More Muscle Mass

Jonathan Lawson muscular - Step Back to Move Your Muscle Mass Forward

Q: I understand that heavy weight isn’t important for maximum muscle growth. Can you tell me what I should include in my workouts to build the most mass possible in the shortest time. I want to get bigger.

A: Well, “heavy” weights are important, but “heavy” is relative to YOU—and dependent on muscle fatigue. You may struggle with 20 pounds in a certain exercise at the END of a bodypart workout. So that 20 pounds is “heavy” for you on that exercise at that moment… [Read more…]
