Arnold’s Shredded Shoulders

Arnold doing seated one-arm cable laterals - colorized photo

Q: You mentioned that Arnold liked a seated cable lateral. Did he do them sitting on the floor? Why not just do them standing?

A: He actually did them sitting on a low stool. He could probably tell by feel that the low position put him at a better height for an ideal resistance curve than doing them standing when the pulley is set near the floor… [Read more…]

New Shoulder-Size Move

Two-arm cable high pulls

Q: I like the one-arm cable high pull that you had in a recent newsletter. Working the lateral head in the upper “press” position without the danger of overhead-press joint compression is just what I needed to fill the gap. My question is, can I use two arms at once? I don’t have a lot of time to work out, so one-arm and one-leg moves aren’t good for me.

A: For those who don’t know what a cable one-arm high pull is, here’s trainer Vince McConnell demonstrating… [Read more…]

Steve's delts, before and after

A few weeks, ago I mentioned that I was adding a contracted-position exercise for my medial-delt head at every upper-body workout… [Read more…]

Unique Shoulder-Size Exercise

Start, middle, and finish positions of two-arm cable delt pulls

Yesterday I discussed the one-arm cable delt pull, a hybrid front raise-lateral raise with a low cable.

I’m experimenting with it as an add-on move after the ideal medial-head exercise, striving for new shoulder roundness and fullness.

It puts the medial head in the high contracted position similar to [Read more…]

Older, Boulder Shoulders

Start and finish positions of cable delt pulls

Yesterday I discussed how, after using only the incline one-arm lateral and one-arm cable lateral for a while, the ideal medial-delt-head exercises, my shoulders had decent detail but remained somewhat flat.

I needed more roundness, a “cap” on my shoulders… [Read more…]

New Take on Shoulder Size

Start and finish positions of cable delt pulls

My son-in-law-to-be was back from his firefighter academy, and he and my daughter were over to wash their dog again in our outdoor shower…

He is a thick dude with good bodybuilding potential, but he’s always looking to broaden his shoulders. Genetics gave him somewhat narrow clavicles, so the only way to get wider is to build shoulder mass. [Read more…]

Front-and-Back Shoulder Mass

The kids were over again to bathe their dog Kingston in our outdoor shower. He’s a big, ferocious-looking Doberman-esque breed, but gentle as a teddy bear—even with our two terrier terrorists, one of which is a growling alpha nut job.

They are always ready for my go-to question (the kids, not the dogs): “So how are your workouts going?” [Read more…]

Add Forward-Lean Laterals for Shoulder Size

Jonathan Lawson seated laterals - Don't Want to Feel Like a Weakling

Q: In many of your workouts, you suggest forward-lean laterals. What are those, and why should I use them instead of regular standing lateral raises [for medial-delt-head mass]?

A: The deltoid is a unique muscular structure. It controls the movement around a ball-and-socket joint, so the fibers wrap around the area in bundles, moving in many directions. You can see that in this photo of Jonathan… [Read more…]
