Overtraining Test

19" Arm - Overtraining Test

Q: You’ve mentioned that the Anabolic Reload workouts are particularly effective at priming fast muscle growth if you’re overtrained. But how do I know if I’m overtrained? Is there any sort of “overtraining test?”

A: If you’ve been training fairly hard and heavy consistently for at least two months, we can almost guarantee you’re overtrained…

The Anabolic Reload workouts are designed to provide an optimal dose of muscle-fiber activation, slow-twitch and fast-twitch, with moderate weights and brief workouts.… [Read more…]

8 Pounds of Muscle in 6 Weeks

Jonathan Lawson Barbell Curls - 8 Pounds of Muscle in 6 Weeks

Q: I gained 8 pounds of muscle in 6 weeks using the Ultimate 10×10 Mass Workout [in Chapter 3]. It transformed my physique. I noticed that Brad Schoenfeld, Ph.D.’s 3 hypertrophy triggers include mechanical tension from heavy weights, but I used light weights. Would I have gained even more muscle by incorporating heavy sets?

A: Before we answer, let’s lay some groundwork — like the 3 key hypertrophy triggers for optimal mass stimulation [Read more…]

New Muscle Stress for Freaky Mass

JL 3D Triceps Positions - New Muscle Stress for Freaky Mass

Q: I liked the suggestion of moving from The Anabolic Reload Mass Workout, with a high-rep set first to fatigue slow-twitch fibers (STX), to a workout with a heavy pyramid first followed by STX on a contracted move. After five weeks on that, I’d like to add in stretch-position exercises for more trauma/muscle stress and, I hope, more growth. Is there a workout you can suggest?

That’s how you get more growth, guaranteed. The addition of stretch-position exercises will inflict new muscle stress and a significant spike in muscle mass… [Read more…]

STX + SEX for Massive Muscle Growth

JL Arm Muscle Fibers - STX + SEX for Massive Muscle Growth

Q: The Anabolic Reload Mass Workout, with a high-rep set first to fatigue slow-twitch fibers (STX), has helped me add six pounds of muscle in four weeks. Now I’m ready to go back to a three-way split, but the STX method worked so well that I want to keep using it, but after my heavy work. I’m in my 20s, so heavy weights is not a problem. Any suggestions? (Title: STX + SEX for Massive Muscle Growth)

A: That’s exactly why we love The Anabolic Reload Mass Workout for a two-to-six-week mass burst… [Read more…]

3-second change = Freaky muscle gains

Jonathan demonstrating undergrip chins

I just read Anabolic Reload in one sitting. Great! I like the idea of progression with rest/pause add-ons every few workouts. But shouldn’t there be an uptick EVERY workout so you get more freaky muscle gains each time you train?

We like the way you think—a bit obsessive-compulsive, but we can identify. LOL…  [Read more…]

Freaky Growth for a High-Rep Hater

Danny Padilla in Gym - Freaky Growth for a High-Rep Hater

Q: I get it. Using a high-rep set to failure in order to fatigue the slow-twitch fibers first gets more fast-twitch fibers to fire on the heavy sets after. I also like the fact the the slow-twitchers get growth stimulation too. I get bigger faster, but I hate that high-rep set. It hurts and it’s boring. I tend to speed it up to get it over with. Is there another way to get freaky growth?

A: Yes, there are two ways. Before we get to those, we want to explain why it works via the Size Principle of Muscle Fiber Recruitment.  [Read more…]

Triple-Hit Anabolic Reload

JL 3D Biceps Exercises - Triple-Hit Anabolic Reload

Q: As you explain in Anabolic Reload, your 3 Positions of Flexion for each muscle align with Brad Schoenfeld, Ph.D.’s 3 hypertrophy triggers for a triple-hit anabolic reload. That got me thinking. I like the full-body workouts in that ebook, but I’m considering: Monday, all midrange work; Wednesday, all contracted; and Friday, all stretch. That way it’s only one exercise for each muscle with the STX method at each workout. Is that a good idea?

A: For the uninitiated, the 3 key hypertrophy triggers you must attack for optimal mass stimulation, according to Schoenfeld, are: [Read more…]

Freaky new muscle size after only 1 workout?

JL Back - Freaky New Muscle Size After Only 1 Workout

Q: I’ve been training hard 5 days a week for almost a year. I decided to try the Anabolic Reload Mass Workout, and after the weekend off and then only 1 workout, I swear I look bigger with new muscle size. Is it my imagination? With this workout I’m doing less volume, but I am using the high-to-low STX method with a slower negative, 1/3 tempo, on ever rep. I’m more sore than I’ve been in a while, but is it really possible that I’m bigger already?

A: It’s not only possible, it’s very probably — reality and NOT your imagination because of a few things that are happening to induce new, immediate hypertrophy… [Read more…]

Freaky Mass-Maker Workout

Platz Quads closeup - Untapped Freaky Mass Trigger

Q: I’m using the Anabolic Reload Mass Workout and really feel the high-rep set first on the big exercises, like bench presses. I’m only 30, but I’m wondering if a few weeks down the road I should try using stretch-exercise-first workout in Chapter 8 [The Over-40 STX Workout] to get some new freaky mass?.

A: New research says absolutely. Not only will that high-rep stretch set first help you activate more fast-twitch fibers on the heavier sets that follow, it will also trigger a unique layer of muscle mass… [Read more…]

Your Guide to Freaky Muscle Size

3D Triceps Positions - Your Guide to Freaky Muscle Size

Q: It’s very cool that your 3 Positions of Flexion for each muscle align with Brad Schoenfeld, Ph.D.’s 3 hypertrophy triggers. Do you think it’s best to use all three for each muscle at every workout or to split up the positions over multiple workouts, as in the Anabolic Reload programs‘ guide to freaky muscle size?

A: For the uninitiated, the 3 key hypertrophy triggers you must attack for optimal mass stimulation, according to Schoenfeld, are: [Read more…]
