Here’s a vintage shot of Arnold and Frank Zane during Tank Top Week at the original Gold’s Gym. Unfortunately, no photos were allowed at the gym during Tiara Week. [Read more…]
Moment of Bodybuilding Zen 191: Arnold’s Beach Physique
Arnold’s dancing derrière trick always attracted a gorgeous crowd on the beach.
It took concentration, and Arnold was a master. His robotic focus in the gym is one of his secrets for getting the most out of every target muscle—and eventually playing a robot in movies.
Arnold always said that visualizaton is key—often imagining his biceps as mountains, much like the ladies above are imagining his glutes as Bundt cakes.
Research shows mind-to-muscle contractions enhance fast-twitch muscle activation—and that means more growth…
You can make it even better with slow-twitch exhaustion (STX), a preliminary blood-infusing higher-rep set.
For more on all of that, as well as the ideal size-building exercise for each muscle infused into efficient mass workouts, see Old Man, Young Muscle.
Till next time, train hard—and smart—for BIG results.

Mass-Building Acceleration
After the installments on damage control to enhance the hypertrophy process, the subject of Speed Sets stood out…
I mentioned that the Old Man, Young Muscle workout has two regular sets followed by one or two Speed Sets for each muscle. [Read more…]
Moment of Bodybuilding Zen 187: Arnold’s Traffic-Stopping Walk
One of Arnold’s past hobbies was to walk the streets shirtless and see how many car accidents he could cause. The truck in the background barely avoided a light pole and a bearded man in a turban on skates playing a guitar. (Yes, it was Venice, California.) [Read more…]
More Arnold Training Surprises and “Advices”…
When Arnold was in the gym for serious bodybuilding training, he always used a multi-angular approach—never just one exercise.
Yes, he relied on big, basic exercises, like barbell curls, but also stretch- and contracted-position moves, like incline curls and concentration curls—what I call Positions-of-Flexion training… [Read more…]
How Arnold Trained (it’s not how you think)…
Q: What’s your opinion of Arnold training six days a week? I read that he worked each muscle three times every seven days with 20 sets per body part at each workout. I know he used steroids, but that much training seems excessive. How could someone recover from that and grow? [Read more…]
Moment of Bodybuilding Zen 184: Arnold Licks His Competition and More
Here’s a rare photo of Arnold in contest-diet mode, suffering a hunger hallucination of a giant candy cane. Mmm. At least that’s his story—and he’s sticking to it. [Read more…]
Moment of Bodybuilding Zen 183: Arnold’s Beach Body
A trip to the beach with Arnold was always interesting—plenty of flexing, wine, and women, who would voluntarily dust the sand off his thighs. Dangerous—this lady was seen wearing an eye-patch after this photo. [Read more…]

2) Altered rep speed
3) Stretch overload
4) More or less rest between sets

Moment of Bodybuilding Zen 179: Arnold’s 1980 Olympia Win
Here’s Arnold checking his progress in the mirror prior to his 1980 Mr. Olympia comeback win. How do we know it was that year? Notice the banner: “Mentzer is Coming.” We don’t think that was warning people what was going on in the back room. [Read more…]
